Cable Tracer | Tone Generator And Circuit Tool

One of the biggest problems you find often with networks in large office complexes is that your signal fails in one or more of the network cables. When this happens, you need to start the process of locating where the fault is using a cable tracer. It could be a cable broken somewhere or short circuited. In case the problem occurs close to a terminal, you have the option to carry out a repair but if the cable is broken halfway, then you need to replace the entire cable.

There are several types of cable tracers. The simplest and the oldest cable tracer is the one that uses tone tracing technology. This simple method of tracing is done using a tone generator and a tone tracer. When you need to trace a problem with a network what you need to do is to connect the tone generator to the cable that gives trouble and to carry the tone tracer along the path of the cable. This cable tracer is so easy to use.  When you walk along the path, if the signal is lost at a certain point, you must understand that the cable is broken there. In case you feel that signal is branching off, that means there is a short circuit on the line.

A cable tracer that uses tone technology is good for a line that has only a few cables but if the line has 50 cables and the distance you need to cover, could be covered in 5 minutes, in order to cover all the cables it will take 500 minutes which means more than 8 hours need to be spent if you work nonstop. Due to this reason a cable tracer that uses tone generator technology is not practical for such situations.

When you need to test many cables at the same time you could use a different kind of wire tracer. This circuit tracer is called the continuity tester. Continuity tester is a cable tracer that could be used to test a maximum of 24 cables at a time. Continuity tester is a cable tracer that has a remote that could be connected to one end while the signal tester is connected to the other end. Then what you need to do is to connect all the wires to the signal tracer one by one. When the signal tracer is connected to the same cable as the remote, the number of the remote is shown in the signal tracer. Then you will be able to locate the cable. This cable tracer could be used to test multiple cables by buying a few more remotes.

Remotes for the continuity tester could be bought in the shop. The remotes are normally numbered in a series. Sometimes a cable tracer of this type has a built in tone tracer to make it a more complete cable tracer. Also having two tools in one will save you space and expenditure. As and when you need, you have the possibility to change technology and use the best one for the job.
